On December 12th and 13th, a meeting was held in Prespes with wetland Management Authorities about the protection of pelicans.

The meeting was organized by the Society for the Protection of Prespes with the co-operation of the Hellenic Ornithological Society.

Representatives of the Authorities of Wetlands of Amvrakikos, Kerkini Lake, Messologi Lagoon, Aherontas – Kalamas Estuaries, Nestos Delta – Vistonida – Ismarida Lakes, Prespes Lakes and Evros Delta participated on the meeting.

The Management Authorities presented the status of pelicans in their areas, as well as the problems and threats they face. Good practices for the monitoring and protection of the two species were discussed.

The Society for the Protection of Prespes presented the project of monitoring the Dalmatian Pelicans through transmitters they are running. It is noted that three of those Dalmatian Pelicans have been observed in Evros Delta, a fact that confirms one more time the connection of the two wetlands. Of course, all the wetlands of northern Greece especially, have a great importance for the survivor of the pelicans and as Management Authorities it was decided in the meeting common actions to be made for their monitoring and protection.
