Midwinter counts in Evros Delta – Record numbers!

Thousands of water birds and other species find shelter every winter in Evros Delta, coming from Northern countries. The lagoons, the wet meadows and the shallow coastal areas offer food and security in swans, geese, ducks, waders, raptors.

During the Midwinter counts that are co-ordinated in Greece by the Hellenic Ornithological Society and were realized in 20th January, the staff, members of the Board and friends of the Evros Delta Management Authority, had the opportunity to observe and count big numbers of waterfowl, unprecedented for the area.

In total, more than 200.000 birds were counted, a record number for Evros Delta the last decades. Most of the birds were observed in the wider area of Drana lagoon and Dimitriadis meadow.

The most numerous species was the Teal with more than 101.000 birds. The ducks were in total many tens of thousands, while 2800 geese and 5100 were also counted. The remarkable presence of 13 White – tailed Eagles is also worthwhile to be noted.

The count was a very pleasant surprise that enforces our view for the value of the wetland as a refuge for the wintering of birds. And of course it reminds us our obligation to preserve it as it is a critically important area for the survival of wildlife.
