New Greek record of Spur – winged Lapwings in the Evros Delta

As every year, this year as well, the staff of the Management Body of Evros Delta and Samothraki Protected Areas, during the scientific monitoring of the birds, carried out successfully the counting of the noisiest for this period bird, the Spur – winged Lapwing.

Spur – winged Lapwing is an impressive bird with black and white plumage and sandy brown back, long black legs and red eyes, which comes to our country every spring. This elegant bird, out of all Europe, it visits our country to breed in the coastal wetlands of Thrace, leaving again our wetland in the fall for the South.

It prefers to live in open ground and swamps, especially in salty ones. It builds its nest on the ground and usually lays three to four spotted eggs that are incubated by both parents.

In recent years there has been an increase in the numbers and active pairs of the species in the Evros Delta.

For this year the number is a record for Greece, as 125 birds have been recorded so far, a fact that fills us with optimism and joy for the importance of our beautiful wetland, proving that it is one of the most important areas for this species in Greece, at the northern part of Greece where is breeding.
